Brisbane tennis fans to travel for free

A deal has been struck today with the Translink Transit Authority to offer free public transport for Brisbane International tournament ticketholders.

The TransLink event ticket will enable spectators to travel free to and from the venue on the entire QR network and BT services (Brisbane buses), including bus shuttles from Corinda railway station.

Brisbane International Tournament Director Steve Ayles said, “The inclusion of free public transport with the tournament tickets means the event has become even more accessible and greater value for tennis enthusiasts.

“We are confident that this initiative will add to an already great event, which will be one of the best value tickets in sport.

“It will give a greater number of tennis fans a chance to be part of the action and to experience the carnival atmosphere of the event.

“With the likes of Djokovic, Tsonga and Verdasco in the men’s draw and Ivanovic, Hantuchova and Mauresmo heading the women’s line-up, the Brisbane International will put Brisbane on the world’s sporting calendar in January,” Ayles said.

Translink spokesperson Adam Nicholson said integrated ticketing was about making public transport more convenient and easier to use.

“Integrated ticketing means that people can travel on our QR and BT services to and from the Brisbane International in January,” Mr Nicholson said.

“The one tournament ticket will take you to and from the event, no matter which combination of those modes you use to reach your destination.

“Translink are happy to be working with the Brisbane International to provide transport facilities to what will be a major Queensland sporting event.”

Mr Nicholson said for more information about public transport to this event, people could phone the TransLink call centre on 13 12 30 or visit www.translink.com.au.

Tickets are now on sale through Ticketek, with reserved stadium seating starting at just $24.90.
Tickets can be purchased online at www.ticketek.com.au or 1300 888 104.

This is fantastic news. It is even better than free tram travel from Flinders Street Station in Melbourne during the Aussie Open. This will help to make the event more accesssible to all people and we will definitely make use of this. Great Work!!

  • Barbara Mills

We had been really hoping for a City Cat option -is any planned for the future? If so, what a lovely way to attend the tournament!

We have always gone to the Australian Open in Melbourne (but have given that up in favour of Brisbane!) and usually take the launch to that on at least one of the days.

    Congratulations Brisbane International and Translink.
I’ve already worked out my journey using public transport.
    Thank you,
    Sandra

Yes, this is good news, and good thinking. Good job, organisers.

I believe Ivanovic will wont one or two tournament

  • patrticia

great fantastic, pity i will miss out as we have moved to NZ for a ski break

Great news offering free public transport. We were planning on going to the Australian Open, but are thrilled to support our new Queensland facility. Can’t wait to see it on opening weekend, and attend the night match. Tennis is the only sport I play and watch.

I love to meet Novak Djokovic.
Is it all right a Grand Pass ticket or I have to buy a stadium seating ticket for using free public transport.
Anyway I want Djokovic to win.

  • Baz

Let me just say what an absolutely fantastic event this will now be. The communication between event organisers and state departments inspires me to do better! A pat on the back! Hooray

  • garrison

I agree with Barbara. Extending the CityCat from St Lucia to the Tennyson site should be fast-tracked for the inaugural opening. Great that the new venue is next to the river. I have my tickets to the finals and can’t wait!

  • Terry B

AFL have the same deal with free public transport to the Gabba included in the entry ticket. Who needs the headache and stress of traffic congestion & parking problems. Doubt if I would go to these sporting events without this added bonus as incentive.

For those of us living in the eastern suburbs such as Carindale the transport arrangements for an INTERNATIONAL TENNIS TOURNAMENT come a very bad second compared to those for a club league football match – bus then train then shuttle bus (or a heck of a long walk particularly for the elderly)as against one bus from Carindale.
YOU SHOULD TAKE YOUR LEAD FROM MELBOURNE WHERE PUBLIC TRANSPORT TO THE TENNIS IS EXCELLENT. If we hadn’t purchased tickets we wouldn’t be coming. Never again!!

  • Cathy

Hope QR adds day time Corinda-Yerrongpilly service. Much better than a shuttle bus. Also QR could reintroduce the Gold Coast train stopping at Yerongpilly.

  • Campbell

This is good but a lot of the volunteers have to be there before the shuttle buses start.

Has anyone though of the Ball Kids?

  • Marcus

Great free public transport with ticket, but what about reintroducing the express train from Gold Coast stopped at Yeerongpilly? instead of Cooper Plains! You build a world class tennis centre with no express train even if it was for major events this woulde enhance the experience. Inconvenience for Gold Coast people who now have to change at Beenleigh and wait for the Ferny Grove line. Qld Rail the silence is deafening

  • Camilla

Transport needs to be improved for an event that will ‘put Brisbane on the world’s sporting calendar in January’ ….

Agree with Cathy about the Gold Coast train … why was it taken off??? Also how are locals going to park their cars at Yerongpilly to catch the train to work during the event?

  • http://BrisbaneInternationalTennis William

Les is so right. Furthermore, QR would divert rail traffic through Tennyson in the event of a power failure or mishap between Corinda and the City ( or Park Road and City) It can’t be all that hard for the ‘experts’. Why can’t it be like EKKA week when trains run all day to Exhibition Station?

We live on the GCoast, so looking forward to travelling to the tennis, only to discover, Yerrongpilly express line cancelled. I hve a disabled husband, so either we take the Beenleigh route where their is walking involved to Corinda, or we go to Roma St, change to the Ipswich line, direct access to shuttle bus transfer to the centre. I phoned Bne tennis today who informed me that they will be supplying shuttle services from Yerrongpilly for the disabled, eldery, how come QR can’t do the same???

  • Frank

How about shuttle buses running from Garden City Indooroopilly and Carindale direct to the Tennis Centre as happens with events at Suncorp stadium.

  • jacqui

I am going to the first night comp and i am disappointed to find that from carindale i need to take two buses to get to the tennis but cannot get home as no bus services run from the tennis at 10pm,i can get a train to southbank but then what, hopefully in the future a service to the major centre eg garden city, carindale, can be introduced

  • Bernadette Hunt

This is only great news if you live on a train line. We live at Carindale and are used to a great bus shuttle service to and from sporting events. When we purchased tickets we presumed this sort of service would be provided, at the beginning and end of each session. For us to drive to a train station there is either virtually no parking or 2 hour parking so getting there is going to be a major drama and may mean us not bothering next year. To make it worse we bought tickets to the finals for my 83 year old father-in-law for christmas and I now have no idea how we are going to get him there before he is too exhausted to enjoy the game. We would have been happy to pay a premium for a shuttle service or parking for those sessions we are bringing him to, but unless you live on the Beenleigh or Corinda train line there is really no provision for any transport services to the event. Free public transport – Great! Now just add some bus services for people nowhere near a train and it will actually mean something!

  • bern

what about residents of graceville? there is one BCC bus in the morning and none coming home after play is finished. we can catch the train out 2 stops to catch a shuttle bus back past our front door. how daft! the shuttle bus should be picking up enroute between corinda and tennyson. not well thought out.

  • chris

Hopefully organisers will be able to get the City Cat on board for the future – fantastic way to get to the event.

  • Troy

Extremely poor setup. I live on the Gold Coast and i am so dissappointed. I also bought tickets for my parents (dad disabled) for xmas, now our excitement has turned to stress on how to get there. We don’t want public transport… we just want to drive there… does anyone know the nearest place to the centre that we can park??

  • Chris

Yes, it’s great to have the tennis back in Brisbane. Pity the sails couldn’t extend to cover the spectators as well as the players on Showcourts 1&2. And yes we need that CityCst or at least some ferry access. A good day, though.

  • Judy

I purchased my tickets thinking it would be as accessible as the Aust Open. I am bitterly disappointed with the transport arrangements and the lack of communication being given to patrons. I am amazed to see the large carpark not being utilised to its potential and as a Disabled Ticket holder (Red Card)I have to catch a train and walk long distances. This experience has soured my enthusiasm for tennis in Brisbane. I have a medical condition that limits my walking ability yet each session I attend I have to get from the train station and back – an exhausting and threatening experience. Promises of a shuttle service to and from Yeerongpilly station were not forthcoming yet the press and TV indicated that it was to be.I hope that for 2010 patrons are provided with improved travel options and honest communiaction.

  • Clem

Why is there not a regular shuttle bus from Yeerongpilly station? It is a fair hike for elderly people or those who are not able to walk distances, such as my wife who has had knee problems. If a decision has been made that there will be no public parking, there should be shuttles to the complex as there is at Suncorp Stadium.

  • allan mahoney

pity free trasport from sunshine coast not included rail great buses no
