Ivanovic ousts Dokic in Brisbane

Crowd loyalties were divided but “Aussie Ana” emerged a 7-5 1-6 6-3 winner in her first-round match-up with Jelena Dokic at the Brisbane International on Monday.

Ana Ivanovic may officially be a third-seeded Serbian at the tournament but she has also become an adopted Australian since hooking up with local golfer Adam Scott.

And just like Kim Clijsters when she was adopted by Aussie crowds during her engagement to Lleyton Hewitt, Ivanovic received warm local support as she beat the Australian player in 99 minutes.

Dokic, 26, became the darling of Australian tennis when she took her wildcard all the way to the Australian Open quarterfinals last year.

But the Brisbane crowd was clearly torn by the presence of Ivanovic with Queenslander Scott in attendance at Pat Rafter Arena for his partner’s first tournament in four months.

Ivanovic, 21, is on the comeback trail after an injury-marred 2009 saw her finish the year ranked 21st in the world.

The former world No.1 has spent the past month preparing for the tournament on the Sunshine Coast with her high-profile boyfriend after following him around on the golf course at the Australian PGA.

In all, it was a “very frustrating” year for Ivanovic – at least her new beau could understand.

Coincidentally Scott also had a shocker – but Ivanovic said they would both emerge “stronger” from the experience.

World No.56 Dokic also bowed in the 2009 Brisbane International first round – to Amelie Mauresmo – before her fairytale run at Melbourne.

Unforced errors by Dokic helped Ivanovic close out the first set before the Australian came alive in the second.

Dokic hit winner after winner to race to a 5-0 lead before being broken, only to recover and win the second set in 25 minutes.

Ivanovic did not hold her serve in the second set.

Roles were reversed in the third as Ivanovic broke Dokic three times to win the set in 31 minutes.

More to come.

That was the very definition of an “ugly win”. But a win is a win. Glad Ana is moving on and I am hopeful she will show improvements in her next match. Ajde!

I'm Australian and I seriously don't understand the 'Aussie' + overseas Personality. Are we that desperate to 'adopt' celebrities / sport stars?! Aussie Ana, Aussie Kim [Clijsters] – Roger Federer was coached by two Australian coaches, why don't we make him an honourary Aussie too? That way, we can sincerely claim that we have the best Men's tennis player in the Open Era.

Jelena was making Ana look ordinary for most of the match until midway through the third set. Its a shame Jelena didnt take all the opportunities she had. It could have even ended up something like 6-2 6-1. Ana never gave up tho which was a good quality! 11 double faults is too much from Jelena so i hope she works on that.

Ivanovic just keeps getting hotter. Also, how over-rated is Tomic.

I was at the tennis today in Brisbane and saw the Jelena/Anna match. How disappointing that Jelena could not carry her great tennis through the entire match and win. It was torturious to watch. Rather a loss by Jelena rather than a win by Ana.

Mate, I spent few months in Australia, and definitely, only serious brain damaged European, can wish to be called “Aussie”…Kim and Ana, don't like those nicknames, trust me…

Tomic is not overated at all. If you do your research and know your Tennis check out his stats.

    http://www.atpworldtour.com/Rankings/Singles.as…

He is the top 11th ranked Australian player and has played the least amount of Mens Tournaments of 8, edged out by one ranking point by Matthew Ebden (17 tournaments played) His stats for a 17 year old are very impressive to say the least.
Check out the ages of the other players ranked ahead of him and how many tournaments they have played.

I know right!!! We’ve got our own sporting stars.. Shouldn’t we be throwing our support behind them rather then trying to just ‘adopt’ other players because they have some Australian connection.. I think it’s insanely stupid!!

Hell bummed that Dokic lost.. Hope she trains hard and kicks ass at the Australian Open!!
