A New Year is upon us and with it comes the hope of better things, improvement and even the realisation of long-held dreams. We asked the players what their goals for the 2014 season are, this is what they had to say.

Jelena Jankovic

“Come back to top five, try to improve my game and get better as a player. You know, when I go on court, I want to compete at 100% and be the best player I can be. Results will come. My main goal is to do well in the big events, like Grand Slams and Tier 1s. So we will see how it goes.

Maria Sharapova

“My goal for 2014, first and foremost is to stay healthy, to keep improving and be happy.”

Victoria Azarenka

“A lot of goals, but the most important is to stay healthy.”

Ashleigh Barty

I haven’t really set myself any goals ranking‑wise. I just want to really play a lot of matches this year and try and accumulate a lot of time on court. Yeah, hopefully get up a few wins and the ranking will take care of itself eventually. Just got to keep working hard off the court, and eventually the results will come.

Kei Nishikori

I think top 10 is always my goal. I want to do well more in Grand Slams, because the best result last year or this year was round of 16. So hopefully I can go quarterfinal or semis. I think that’s going to be my next goal.

Kevin Anderson

My goal for 2014 is just to keep improving. It’d be great to have better results than last year and continue that. That’s what I think everybody’s goal is. Obviously finishing last year top 20 was big and looking ahead at this year I’d like to improve on that, so top 15, top 10 would be the goal and within that having better results at tournaments – quarters at Grand Slams or further. So just taking each week at a time and of course just enjoying it as well.

Dominika Cibulkova

“I wish I will go better than this year [2013] and that will be enough for me.”

Angelique Kerber

“Just to play a really consistent year, that’s my goal.”

Marin Cilic

The goal is of course to stay healthy, to be happy and to have good success on the tour. I think with all of that it would be a nice year.

Jamie Murray

Just win. Win as much as we can (laughs).

John Peers

Just win as many matches as we can and probably play the end-of-year Championships.
