Kokkinakis/Thompson surge into final

Australians Thanasi Kokkinakis and Jordan Thompson have continued their dream run at the Brisbane International in the men’s doubles, earning a berth in the final.

The duo upset No.4 seeds Daniel Nestor and Edouard Roger-Vasselin on Treasury Brisbane Day on Pat Rafter Arena, 6-3 6-1.

It marks their third straight upset win in Brisbane, having beaten Lucas Pouille and Stan Wawrinka in the first round and then top seeds Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut in the quarterfinals.

They’ll meet unseeded pair Gilles Muller and Sam Querrey in the final on Hancock Prospecting Day, Muller/Querrey having been handed a free pass to the final when another Aussie duo – Sam Groth and Chris Guccione – were forced to withdraw due to a calf injury for Guccione.

Thompson had a dream run in the singles, making his first ATP quarterfinal with a surprise win over David Ferrer. Kokkinakis is making his return to the tour after a series of injuries.

They are due to play each other in the first round of the Sydney event next week, where they have both received wildcards.
