Verdasco sweeps Ancic aside

7 January 2009, by Brisbane International Tennis

Men’s No.3 seed Fernando Verdasco has eased into the quarterfinals with a 6-2 6-3 win over Croatia’s Mario Ancic.

The world No.15 took less than 80 minutes to dismantle Ancic and set up a quarterfinal showdown with Frenchman Florent Serra who disposed of Jurgen Melzer earlier today.

Ancic struggled to break Verdasco with the hard-hitting Spaniard saving all five break point opportunities against him.

Earlier today at Pat Rafter Arena, Amelie Mauresmo won a three-set thriller against countrywoman Julie Coin, while Paul-Henri Mathieu ousted Ernests Gulbis.

Tonight on Pat Rafter Arena,  Ana Ivanovic takes on Italy’s Roberta Vinci followed by the match between Japan’s Kei Nishikori and Czech Tomas Berdych.
