Nadal set for summer start in Brisbane

2 July 2018, by Brisbane International Tennis

Seventeen-time Grand Slam champion and world No.1 Rafael Nadal will launch his Australian season at the Brisbane International 2019 this summer.

Nadal is in dominant form having won a remarkable eleventh French Open earlier this month, equalling Margaret Court’s record as the only other player to have won the same Grand Slam tournament 11 times.

The Spanish superstar first played Brisbane in 2017 with the tournament proving the perfect preparation for his Australian Open campaign. The 31-year-old went on to reach the final at Melbourne Park against his greatest rival Roger Federer.

Between them, Nadal and Federer have won the past six Grand Slams played in 2017-18.

“I am really looking forward to starting another season in Brisbane. I’m so excited to be coming back in 2019,” Nadal said.

“The field is always strong and the venue is amazing.”

Nadal was hugely popular when he debuted in Brisbane in 2017, and the world tuned in to watch the Spaniard launch the new year in the Sunshine State. More than one million fans live streamed his first practice session at the Queensland Tennis Centre which was teeming with fans keen to see their hero go through his paces.

“I’m looking forward to coming back to Brisbane, it’s such a great tournament and is always played in front of amazing fans,” Nadal added.

Brisbane International Tournament Director Cameron Pearson said he is delighted to be welcoming Rafa back to Brisbane.

“We know how disappointed Rafa was after a knee injury forced him to miss Brisbane earlier this year, he and his team jumped at the chance to come back again in 2019,” Pearson said.

“Rafa is in unstoppable form at the moment, recently winning an eleventh title at Roland Garros. He’s enjoying the sport as much as ever, and we know fans will be delighted to see him back on court in Brisbane.”

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones welcomed Rafael Nadal back to Brisbane.

“Rafa is an international legend. We’re proud to have him at the Brisbane International not just due to his great profile but because he’s such an entertaining athlete,” Jones said.

“Major events are an important part of our strategy to grow Queensland’s tourism industry and create jobs in our state.

“We are proud to support the Brisbane International which attracts nearly 100,000 spectators from across Australia every year and is worth almost $10 million to Brisbane’s economy.

“The event is a flagship feature on TEQ’s ‘It’s Live! in Queensland’ events calendar, worth $780 million to the state in 2018.”
