Soderling falls to Czech mate

9 January 2009, by Brisbane International Tennis

Czech eighth seed Radek Stepanek has come from a set down to cause a quarter-final upset over Sweden’s Robin Soderling at the Brisbane International.

World No.17 and tournament fourth seed Soderling took the first set easily but was undone by the Czech’s consistency from the baseline to go down 2-6 6-4 6-3 in one hour 45 minutes on Friday.

Stepanek also had to fight back from a break down early in the last set but immediately broke back and broke again in the eighth game.

It was only world No.26 Stepanek’s second victory over the Swede in six encounters.

He will now face the winner of Friday night’s all-French quarter-final between Jo Wilfried-Tsonga and Richard Gasquet in Saturday’s semi-finals.
