Best of Brisbane: Azarenka v Jankovic

30 December 2014, by brisbaneinternational.com.au

In the lead-up to Brisbane International 2015, we revisit some of the tournament’s most memorable moments in our “Best of Brisbane” series.

Serb Jelena Jankovic had stunned then-world No.2 Victoria Azarenka in their previous meeting, a straight-sets dumping in the round robin stage of the WTA Tour Championships. And after conceding her opening three service games, the two-time Australian Open champion looked to be headed for a similarly quick dismissal at the hands of Jankovic in the 2014 Brisbane International semifinals. The turning point came in the opening game of the second set, when Azarenka stared down three break points before steadying to hold and take control. As the match wore on it was the Belarusian who handled the afternoon heat better. She needed 10 match points to get through her quarterfinal the night before and stumbled again when serving for a place in the final at 5-2 before booking her place in her first Brisbane final since her maiden tour title on Pat Rafter Arena five years earlier.
