Gavrilova, Kubot advance in qualifying

UPDATE 8pm: Australian Daria Gavrilova has overcome an 11-year age gap to take down former world No.16 Virginie Razzano in straight sets to move within one match of qualifying for the Brisbane International main draw.

The 20-year-old, who recently claimed the Australian Open Wildcard Playoff, saw off the Frenchwoman 6-4 6-2 in 1h 21mins to remain the only Australian left in women’s qualifying after Anastasia Rodionova went out 6-4 7-5 to American Irina Falconi in second round action.

Gavrilova will meet Russian Elizaveta Kulichkova for a spot in the main draw after the Russian toppled 44-year-old stalwart Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-4 6-0.

In men’s first round qualifying, Australian wildcard Blake Mott was up a set and a break before bowing to top-seeded German Tobias Kamke 4-6 7-5 6-2, however Mott’s countryman Matt Reid fared better, taking out past Chilean Hans Podlipnik-Castillo 6-4 7-6(5) first up.

Former Wimbledon quarterfinalist Lukacz Kubot was the first men’s qualifying winner for Brisbane International 2015.

The defending Australian Open men’s doubles champion easily dispatched of American Alex Kuznetsov 6-3 6-2, with the Pole to meet Japan’s Yasutaka Uchiyama, who upset French eighth seed Lucas Pouille by the same scoreline.

Russian Victor Troicki, who reached a career-high ranking of world no.12 in 2011, sent down 18 aces in a 6-3 7-6(4) win over Australia’s Maverick Banes.

Troicki set up a clash with Miloslav Mecir, after the Slovakian beat Pole Michal Przysiezny 3-6 6-3 6-4; while Japan’s Taro Daniel progressed past Antonio Veic 6-4 6-3.

Tim Smyyczek won a battle of the Americans, beating former US Open semifinalist Robby Ginepri in a breeze, 6-1 6-1; third-seeded Turk, Marsel Ilhan, overcame a slow start to edge past Slovenian Jozef Kovalik 4-6 7-5 6-2.

Canadian Frank Dancevic needed three sets to get past plucky Australian wildcard Harry Bourchier, with the youngster claiming the second set, but ultimately going down 7-6(3) 4-6 6-1.

In other women’s second round qualifying results, top seed Yaroslava Shvedova moved comfortably through against Poland’s Paula Kania 6-4 6-2, Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko, the 2013 Brisbane International semifinalist easily progressed past Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski 6-3 6-1 and Russian Alla Kudryavtseva downed American Julia Boserup 6-3 6-1.

Fourth-seeded Madison Brengle beat Dutchwoman Richel Hogenkamp 6-4 6-1, while Maryna Zanevska advanced past Jovana Jaksic 6-1 6-4.
