Dimitrov, Thiem set quarterfinal clash

5 January 2017, by brisbaneinternational.com.au

Former finalist Grigor Dimitrov has made light work of French veteran Nicolas Mahut, advancing to his fourth Brisbane International quarterfinal on Thursday.

The seventh seed blasted his way to a 6-2 6-4 victory, fighting back from 0-40 down when serving for the match to hold out the net-rushing world No.39.

He will take on fourth seed Dominic Thiem after the Austrian saw off Australian wildcard Sam Groth 7-6(5) 6-3 for a place in the semifinals.

Groth’s booming serve was on song early but it wasn’t enough against the world No.8, who advanced to the semifinals in Brisbane on debut last season, before bowing to Roger Federer.

More to come …
